Christmas Party at Poveda Kids Nursery

Visit from Infosys Volunteers- 12th December 2010

The 12th of December brought some Christmassy cheer to the kids of our centres with the visit of a group of volunteers from Infosys.  An enthusiatic young lot, led by Prachi from the HR team and Mukesh Kumar- Lead of Client Operations spent over an hour interacting with the kids and participating in exciting language games that tested the English skills of the children.
The group then distributed stationery kits to the children based on collections they had made in cash and kind from their team at Diwali. Each child got a dictionary which they have long needed, a geometric set, a few notebooks and pens and pencils. They also got a bonus of several eats.
The group presented themselves to the kids and the kids introduced themselves and their aspirations to the visitors.
The afternoon ended with everyone joining in singing-Hum honge kamiyaab.

Visit from TAYMI and YEM

25 youth from the TAYMI Pune and the Youth Encounter for Meaning Goa visited the project on 11th November.

The youth were given a brief orientation of the foundation and then sent in groups into 2 slum communities to experience through a wide range of tasks what life in the community is all about. This exposure was a first time for a lot of them and helped present a new perspective. A lot of them came back overwhelmed by the openness and warmth and generosity extended to them by the community and a contrast to the many blessings the take for granted.

Each group then made a 10 minute presentation on their learnings and experience in the community. This was followed by 30 minutes of song and dance led by the youth. The Poveda kids enjoyed the action songs and participated whole heartedly in these.

Diwali celebration 2010

The festival of lights was celebrated at both the Poveda Centres and the Nursery just before the Diwali holidays.

While the children at the Vetalnagar centre learnt to make torans for their houses, the Morwadi kids learnt to make expandable decorations.

The kids at the nursery finger painted diyas and rimmed them with silver dust.

Diwali safety instructions were offered to the children and a celebrative meal marked the end of each party.

Diwali 2010 Parents’ Meeting

The parents of the Morwadi centre were in for a surprise at the parent meeting held on 28th October.

The Poveda didis demonstrated to them 2 novel and healthy recipes to treat their family with at Diwali. Seema didi first taught the parents to make an eggless cake. This was appreciated by the mothers because this was prepared without the use of an oven but instead with a pressure cooker.

Swati didi then prepared surli wadi, an absolutely no oil recipe. The parents sampled each preparation with curiosity and excitement.

Diwali safety instructions for the children followed and brought the meeting to an end.

Celebration of our 1st Birthday

We started our morning at the Morwadi centre which celebrated its first birthday today. The kids had decked themselves up in their finest. Now these kids love games so Reeves Bhaiyya played the role of a Mathemagician with them and enthralled them with a Math trick. After this, he introduced them to the fantastic Sudoku, to some the answers came easy while the rest decided to spend the day at home, cracking the code! The kids were then treated to some yummy cake.

A visit to the Vetalnagar centre was filled with a pleasant surprise. The kids had decided to speak in English about this festive day and had come well prepared. We do not know how they managed to put this together but they did a fantastic job. Some of them had their script in English, some English written in Marathi and some, part English and part Marathi. Guddi played anchor to the morning and the following is what they presented:

Good Morning Bhaiya and Didis.

At first Bhaiya taught us English and Dimple Didi taught us Drawing very nice. We like that very much.

I like Rashmi didi because Rashmi didi taught very nice, games also she took so that we like. Then Swati Didi taught us very good things. Other than book we learn about around us what happen. They arrange our trip to Shaniwarwadi, Aga Khan Palace, Empress Garden etc. They told all information about all points. We enjoyed our trip very much.

Thank to Bhaiya and Didi, they open this centre for us and we learn very good things in this year.”

I request to bhaiya to tell us about this centre what you feel.

“Well I am always really happy to come to this centre for three reasons:

First, you are all girls and I believe that girls in India must get educated and have the opportunity to learn, to earn and be independent. Second, you are always full of life.

Third, you ask – Bhaiyya how, Bhaiyya why, Bhaiyya please repeat. Children should always be inquisitive and want to learn more and you are inquisitive children and that is good.

One thing I would like to see better in your centre is the attendance, because if you come to centre everyday and come on time, you will learn more. I do not mind if you make masti, this is your age to make masti and enjoy. But you must come every day, that is more important.”

Thank you bhaiyya and didis.

The celebrated ended with a cake party.

Poveda Kids- 3 months today!

Teaching young kids is a skill I thought I never had until I began teaching at the Nursery.

Each day of these 3 foundational months of the nursery has been filled with tremendous joy and learning. Nothing can compare to the smile you see on the face of these less than 3 year olds walking up to you early in the morning. I greet each student with a high five! And now even some of the non English speaking grandparents will tell their kids- high five de na bhaiyya la!

Learning at this age is fun, kids are extremely curious to know and see for themselves, they imitate quickly and remember fast. The kids are already familiar with alphabets and related words from A to H, they are familiar with a few colours, they know the days of the week and can count from 1 to 3. They are good at singing and know over a dozen rhymes.

The kids have been on a learning and fun excursion to the vegetable and fruit market and later to a park. They have celebrated Independence Day, Raksha Bandhan and Janmashtami at the centre.

Their motor skills have developed fairly, they are good at sorting, at colouring and sticking and enjoy art and craft a lot.

Parents use a monthly schedule provided by us to send in snacks with the kids, this helps us maintain uniformity and link what’s in their snack boxes to what they are learning.

These kiddos totally and absolutely love the outdoors. Pre monsoon dry days and the brief respite we had in August gave the kids the opportunity to scurry and saunter all over the lawn.

The class starts with a few moments of silence and ends with a prayer. We have these young ones end each day’s class with the national anthem and exclaim Bharat Mata ki Jai!

Kids above 3 stay back every day for half an hour of writing initiation.

The people who make this happen

Dimple Didi
Teacher and Mentor

Every child has potential, they just need the right stimulus. Our class has to be different from the rote learning and drab methods used in their schools. The kids learn here by questioning and experimenting, they are encouraged to make mistakes as in doing so, they learn better.

As teachers, we put in a lot of time into preparation for our classes and in review of each session. It's not easy being a good teacher but all the hard work pays off.

We try to expose the kids to new facets of life, exposing them to new professions, getting them to interact with different people, taking them to places they ordinarily would not have gone to.
