Independence Day

For the first time since its inception, we have had the Flag Hoisting at the nursery on Independence Day. Activities of art and craft through the week prepared the kids for the same.

The Lions Club joined hands with us to organize this event. Thus at 8 am on 15th August, the tricolour was hoisted outside Poveda Kids.

The nursery children sing the National Anthem at the end of class each day and hence it was but natural for them to take a lead in singing it on the 15th morning. They finished the anthem with echoing calls of 'Bharat Mata ki Jai'. They also sang Hum honge kamiyab melodiously.

Our centre girls from Chinchwad gaon made the morning special by putting together a beautiful rangoli around the flag post.

The members of the Lion's club present offered some stationery for the kids.

Poveda Kids 2012

The new academic year at Poveda Kids began in June with 15 kids enrolled in play school and 2 kids in junior kindergarten. 3 kids from the previous returned to us in the new academic session.

The children are eager to learn and enjoy their time in class.

Parents' Day, Rakshabandhan, Friendship Day and Janmashtami have been celebrated already and thoroughly enjoyed by the kids.

Career Session- 28th July 2012

Every child in the program has a dream career yet very few are clear with what to do to make their dream come true. Offering the kids information on different careers and exposing to ones they may not even have heard of, if one key goal of the program at Poveda.

On the feast of Fr. Poveda after whom the foundation is named, i.e. 28th July, the children met with Ms. Anita More, Deputy Superintendent at the CID Pune. Ms. More, took the kids through her personal journey of study, determination and hardwork to allow her to be what she is today.  She shared information on different entrance examinations to a variety of government posts and encouraged them to think of a career with the government. Why should we only criticize the government and not become a part of them to make a difference?

Komal and Shakeel, students at the Morwadi centre who aspire to join the police and a few boys who want to join the army had several questions answered.

A word of appreciation to our volunteer Liza didi who brings these resource persons to our centres.

Computer Class at Morwadi

Computer Classes began for the children of the Morwadi Centre on Sunday, 29th April. The kids come in two batches. Rahul Bhaiyya, a volunteer at Poveda Foundation, conducts this training. The laptops donated to Poveda by Rio Tinto are used during these classes. The kids are enjoying their newly learnt skills in paint brush and powerpoint presentations.

Session on Adolescence by Doctors

After months of trying really hard and knocking on various doors, the children of both our centres were visited by 2 gynaecs for a session on Adolescence on Saturday 12th May.

The husband and wife duo- Dr. Rannas, introduced the children to not only the physical changes that take place during this age period but also the emotional, social, aspirational developments and impulses they create. In preparation for this session the children had already sent in their questions to the Doctors ahead of time and the Doctors adequately answered most of the kids doubts.

Towards the end of the session, the kids discussed their career aspirations and the Doctors were able to throw light on the physical and mental demands of the professions the kids choose to go to.

The girls have requested for another session with Dr. Mrs. Ranna.

A big thank you to our volunteer Liza Didi who made this session possible.

Poveda Conferral 2012

Every child has the right to good education even in a country that has few outstanding facilities to serve the economically poor.

The Poveda Foundation, recently celebrated the graduation of its students into the final year of the 4 year program it runs. Started in September 2009, the foundation runs 2 after school support centres for children from Morwadi and Chinchwadgaon. The program begins with kids in class 7 and academically supports them till they pass the SSC. Each child must make a 15% academic increase in English, Math and Science, as against their baseline class 6 assessment, taken at the time of their recruitment.

The Annual Conferral celebrates just these victories. The kids had an average score of 33.8 and 52.35 percent in Science and Math at the start of the program and at the close of this year their average had increased to 64.5 and 61.6 percent respectively. While Kajal a student from the Morwadi centre made a 32% increase in her Math score since the last year, Komal, also from the Morwadi centre made a 27.6% increase in Science. Reshma from the Chinchwad gaon centre scored an average of 89.5% across Math and Science. The conferral is an opportunity not to recognise the toppers but to commend children who have made the highest improvement through their hard work and determination. As many as 24 certificates were awarded to children who made outstanding progress and this served as motivation to all the children to work really really hard in the next year.

This year, the centre kids made and presented through powerpoint presentations the special events they participated through the year. While Rio Tinto has been a huge help by providing the laptops for their computer education and sponsoring the costs of an entire trip for the kids to Goa, the students of Symbiosis helped the kids learn the computer.

Swati Kadam, the science and math teacher spoke on the year gone by and how she has experienced growth both in the kids and in herself.

Also present at the conferral were the children from the Poveda Kids Nursery, who performed various songs and skits that represented their learning through the year. The nursery, started two years ago serves two objectives namely, to create and run an excellent model in English preschool education that can be replicable in the slum communities, thus giving the underserved children access to good education from the start of school and to create a centre where both the poor and those who can afford a tuition fee are educated together, a model that is self sustaining and will contribute towards the organization.

Treza D’souza spoke on the methodology used in the nursery and how it stands out from its peers. She too shared how she has grown as a teacher in the year gone by.

The conferral was attended by the parents of the after school support centre and nursery kids, donors and well wishers of the Poveda Foundation.

Reeves Rodrigues, founder of Poveda and teacher, announced the prize winners and presented the rationale for the same. He invited both the children and the parents to greater responsibility in the next year and expressed his gratitude to the parents of Poveda Kids for choosing Poveda over the other nursery.

Poveda Kids Year End Party

Friday the 13th of April 2012 marked the last day of the children at Poveda Kids Nursery. And although the date may seem inauspicious, it was nothing but a day of fortune for the kids.

Right after a quick rehearsal for their Annual Day, the next day, the kids spent an hour with outdoor games and fun activities organized by their favourite Treza Didi. Later on inside the classroom, the kids made palm print badges for themselves and had an extravagant snack party.

All is well that ends well but for the kids, all was well because the year was a year of outstanding education and fun.
